      Hi,

I have 67 Mercury 500 Thunderbolt. S/N 2168363 I also have the Mercury repair manual that covers years 66 thru 73 or so. How do I determine the particular model I have? The manual lists models with acronyms, such as SS, M and S, but doesn’t list what those acronyms stand for.

There are symbols that look like 2 lightening bolts after thunderbolt just above the exhaust housing. Is that supposed to be SS?

Clarification would greatly help in doing repairs with this manual.

      Thanks for your help.

      All the best,

      Jason

SS is solid state ignition E is electric start with charging S is electric start no charging L is long shaft. M is manual start only.
        Hope this helps.

The only real differences are shaft length and whether it’s manual, electric starting or electric with an alternator. If it’s electric, start her up and use a volt meter to see if your battery is charging. I think the presence of a rectifier would indicate electric with alternator.

Thanks for clearing up the acronyms.

I believe it has a rectifier, if that is the device with three wires on the distributor side that run underneath the flywheel. I’ll check the voltage next time I start it up.
