Hi guys,
I have a ’68 100 hp V4 Johnson that needed the resistor replaced since it had rubbed through the outer cover and was leaking oil. I have a donor motor that I’ve pulled the resistor off of to make the swap. The resistor wires going to the distributor cap are different lengths, so I’ll need to swap them as well. I got the wires off of the resistors fine. How do I remove them from the distributorcap? I don’t want to mess anything up by yanking on them. Do they pull straight out? Unscrew?
While I have the cap off, anything I should check or do maintenance on? The contacts all look good, no corrosion. Also, can I buy this type of resistor at the auto parts store or is it a marine only type part. I really appreciate the help.
Thanks,

November 11, 2016 at 2:38 am #47263Thanks guys! Yes, it is the coil. Says 12 volt resistor on the outside of it. Sorry for the confusion. I’m more familiar with working on the <40 hp OMC engines, so not up on the lingo on these bigger V4 engines.
Appreciate it!
November 11, 2016 at 2:39 am #47264Can I find this type of coil at the auto parts store, or what is the best source for one as a backup?
November 11, 2016 at 4:32 am #47276Well they actually called it a Pulse transformer assembly! It has now been replaced by a coil kit #433659. ME (MarineEngine.com) has them on sale for $24. Hard to beat that when they were near $100! Comes with bracket, wire, and all the stuff you need. Pretty good deal I think.

November 11, 2016 at 12:20 pm #47284That’s a good point. It has such a funky name because it is somewhat special. It operates on input pulses on the order of 300 Volts. Not like a "normal" coil that runs on 6 or 12 Volts.
BTW, you don’t want to go experimenting on that system. The pulse pack is easy to destroy and costs $$$
