I’ve got a 69 Evinrude 25 Sportster that has a tiller that I’m looking to convert to remote steering.  It has the spot on the handle for the steering linkage but I’m not sure what all I need to do to convert this to remote steering.  I want to do something that is portable and/or easy to assemble on the fly since I use this on a RIB that I take with me in my RV.

I’m also wanting to add a RIB steering console and remote control, but not sure if this model even supports that, which would then negate the entire steering system entirely if I can’t control the throttle.  I think it might be possible since if they added the mount for the steering linkage then one would assume that it also has the ability to have a remote control as well (there is a grommet covering what I think is the throttle control cable hole).  I don’t need to start it remotely, it’s not that far of a walk to the motor to engage the electric starter 😬.

I had considered selling this motor in favor of a newer and lighter model (perhaps lower HP), but looking at outboard prices today and the time it takes to get one it just make sense to hold on to this old fella, especially from many accounts I’ve read online this is one of the best outboards Evinrude made.

Thank you for that!  Do you know the part number for that?  Is that a pulley system setup?

Yes, it is for a pulley setup.

That one is for pulley steering.

Here is a sample of the remote control (not mine).

This has been very helpful, thank you!  I was able to find a video of someone doing a very similar setup on the same vintage motor and that helped me to see the parts I need.  Now I need to figure out the part that bolts onto the throttle and transmission arms that hold the control cables on.

                  They are called cable locks.

Is that the term I should be searching for the parts that fit on the motor: cable locks?  I searched for that and “cable retainer” and haven’t even found a part reference anywhere.  I need to find the parts that connect the cable to the motor and I think some sort of arm that holds the sleeve of the cable while the cable itself is manipulating the throttle and transmission.  I’m sure it would be helpful if I knew the proper terms for this stuff, I’m slowly learning!  I was hoping the guy that made the video I posted would have had a part 3 to his video because he left off on “I need to find the part that fits on this” and left me in a lurch 🤓.

I’m actually quite curious about how this works because the transmission lever is fairly stiff, I can see how a cable could pull it forward but not how it could push it back.  My other motor has the linkage inside with the motor and it’s designed to be an easy push-pull, this one is less obvious.

Cable locks #44 and 45 hold the outer sheath of the cable stationary to the motor, and casing guides # 36 slide back and forth to move the shifter and throttle.

Ahhh, I see now!  I didn’t notice that those two ends were the motor end in the diagram.  DOH!

You are a rockstar, thank you so much!
