1969 Evinrude 9.5, this is a motor I am thinking about buying from a guy. He told me it slips out of gear, when under load. I figure it might be a worn clutch dog and am wondering if this part is easy to find on the used market and if that is all it will take to fix the problem.
June 26, 2020 at 7:35 pm #206798Maybe, maybe not. Might be a spun prop hub?? Might be a worn out forward gear too. Might be broken rubber motor mount. Can’t tell from here.
June 26, 2020 at 8:43 pm #206808Umm… could be worse… I have a basket case 9.5 with the drive shaft jammed into the crankshaft receiver. The splines wore (no idea why) and the crankshaft spun — sounding like a spun prop (lots of rpm, no forward movement). I’m not sure if the shaft welded itself to the crank or it jammed, but I’ve tried heat, PB Blaster, concussion, several times over the past 15 years and it’s decidedly stuck.
I have a couple of JWs that are exhibiting the same upper driveshaft spline wear.
June 27, 2020 at 8:46 am #206822I would only pay the “basket case” price for this engine. Best case scenario, prop hub is spun, feeling lucky? Worst case scenario, the mounts are shot pulling it out of forward gear and the driveshaft is stuck like yours… Do you know if this is a fresh or salt water engine?
There is a way to judge whether or not this is a gearcase or a mount issue though….Ask the owner if the engine stays in neutral once it “slips out of gear”? If the engine stays in neutral, then you have a mount issue. If the engine exhibits the usual bucking and jumping while it tries to stay in gear, then it is a gearcase issue. With the engine on a stand, spin the prop and shift into forward gear. Now try to push aft on the flywheel while someone holds the engine in place…You will probably be able to push the powerhead back quite a bit if the mounts are messed up, this will put pressure on the shift linkage which will pull it back into neutral…
This sounds like a good “isolation project”….June 27, 2020 at 11:26 am #206840Umm… could be worse… I have a basket case 9.5 with the drive shaft jammed into the crankshaft receiver. A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
June 27, 2020 at 11:41 am #206841there is a flat spring in the lower unit that creates the detent against the shift rod. Do you feel the detent latching in f/n/r? If not, the flat spring may have bent out of position.
June 27, 2020 at 7:58 pm #206877Ok, I have taken in all this great info. Let’s say I went and took a second look at this motor, without tearing it apart, what could I do to further assess what the problem is before buying?
June 28, 2020 at 10:49 am #206921Did you ask him the questions I proposed? Did you push back on the flywheel to see if the mounts are worn/broken? Is it a fresh or salt water engine?
June 28, 2020 at 10:50 am #206922How much does the seller want for it?
June 29, 2020 at 2:47 pm #207053Sorry fleetwin, missed your above reply. Thanks, I will do that. asking price is $200.
