      Hello,

Just pick up this Elgin but I could not find the year that match up with the serial number 751.22178 on the Elgin websites.

I got the spark back by cleaning the point and adjust the gap. The coil was cracked but still had spark but I plan to replace with the OMC coil. The compression is 80-82 psi range. I got it started with the gas in the cylinder. I am still look for the carb kit since the gasket got bad but when I rebuild the carb, I am sure it one will run at the top since it looks like low usage hour outboard.

You have to use the Sears model number on the tank decal.

          That’s a nice piece, Evinrude.

I have 2 7.5’s that are brown. Their model number leads to a 25 or 30 hp of the same year, but is otherwise not found. I’m my case I suspect it was because these were for the Canadian market and used a different number sequence.

The clues for yours might be the stater grip and the steering handle. Get pictures of other models and see what years used that round starter handle. Later ones used a T shape grip like Mercury ( not OMC)

Also your steering has a holding type device likely for shear pins. Mine don’t. Again by looking at pictures you’ll likely be able to narrow down the year.

I have 5 Elgins and every one of them runs with no or minimal work.
Now if yours pumps water you have won the lottery

          Dave
