Just finished putting the electric shift gearcase back on. Good think I went into it as there were deep transverse fissures on the impeller blades. Hard to say how long it would have pumped.
This was not an especially easy job, at least single-handed, and I’m not 100 percent sure the two water tubes are properly plugged into the pump housing. They *should* be–I didn’t force anything–but there seems to be no way to confirm visually. Is there a way to tell by how things act?
Likewise, apparently the thermostat and pressure valve are in a water box low down between the cylinder banks. Looks like there’s no way to open it without removing a bunch of electrics. Am I missing something here?
Thanks!
August 18, 2017 at 11:14 pm #63390There are supposed to be two white plastic water tube guides in there that make installation much easier, along with confirmation of proper water tube alignment/insertion. They are usually stuck on the copper water tubes when you pull the gearcase down…The plastic water tube guides are not the same length, intentionally. This way, you can get one tube aligned, then slip the other one in place. And yes, trying to get this gearcase installed without a helper, is truly challenging.
Yes, accessing the thermostat is a pain on that engine, you have to remove that electrical bracket that houses the powerpack and electrical pieces. I too, would leave it alone, unless a cooling problem is detected.August 18, 2017 at 11:37 pm #63393I saw those water tube guides but didn’t know what to do with them. They are supposed to slide down into the metal piece that retains the grommets? That makes perfect sense–I should have asked for tips before doing the job. This is NOT mentioned in my OMC manual, which covers up to 1972.
I should probably drop the gearcase back down and check the water tubes, now that I know how. Live and learn.
If I was starting this project over I’d likely give this engine away and pick up a three cylinder looper a couple of years younger.

If you decide to pull it down again, get an assistant….August 19, 2017 at 12:33 pm #63432Anybody know where I can get a schematic of the cooling system for these motors? With the dual water tubes and whatall, I’m not entirely clear on how it works.
