      unblolted the lower gc ….

      loosened the shift rod clip

      but lgc won’t come down

should I keep wacking it with my rubber mallet or is there something else I can do ?

found no oil in GC ….. half an ounce of water came out ….zilch oil motor was probably emptied of oil before storage to prevent any gear case cracking by frost but they never refilled it 😡 …

I need to check gears for heavy rusting when I crack this thing open . 😮

lots of mono on the prop shaft which probably screwed up the oil seal so I will redo the whole GC seals and all

Not sure what you mean when you say "loosened the shift rod clip". The lower unit shift rod connection is just behind the water pump and you have to remove the bolt so the lower unit will come off. There is no clip to undo. You can access the connection when you lower the lower unit enough to see the connection inside of the cavity behind the water pump housing.

Sure hope you just failed to disconnect the shift linkage completely/properly. If not, the upper driveshaft splines may be rusted/seized into the crankshaft splines….

And loosening one of the bolts in the shift rod coupler won’t do – you have to completely remove it.

BY clip I did mean shift rod linkage above the water pump but I disconnected only the bottom screw to near… fall out
I will take out both screws completely and retry

You do not need to remove both screws. Only the bottom one. It’s just that it needs to be removed completely. It sounds like you have already done that. Not sure why it is still stuck. Could be rusted drive shaft splines. It.could also be the water tube grommets stuck on the tube. I have had those get stuck pretty good to the point of pulling one of the grommets out of its seat and having it still stuck to the water tube.

If the driveshaft is rusted to the crank, a dowel puller can be used to try and pop it free. This one is made by Snap On and comes with a variety of different size collets. It’s a slide hammer type of tool and has saved the day many times. I just wish it was mine.

Seems to me you need to be able to drop the lower unit a half-inch or so to reach the shift coupler. If you can do that, it’s not likely that the driveshaft is welded to the crank ? I don’t think there’s that much ‘give’ inside the water pump housing, but I may have been wrong before.

                      Good point!!
Hopefully it is just a stiff grommet, or shift rod connector…

I don’t know that it’s happened here, but it seems that the 9.5 is the engine most likely to have its driveshaft rusted into its crank. Why does it happen, and what can be done to prevent it?
