1- should I have a round piece of foam inside the cowl just above the carb air intake ?? is it used to filter air or keep any water splash out of the carb ?? found it on the shop floor and seems to match an indent in the cowl foam lining
2- the main foam lining in the cowl is all oily/messy not a big issue function wise but has anyone replaced (glued in) a new foam lining made with common 1 inch foam….. by removing and copying the old one’s pattern ?
If that foam is crumbling, oil soaked, or otherwise deteriorating, tear it all out.
It will break up and get sucked into the carburetor and the motor will run wrong. Depending on the version of the manifold on your motor, it could be easy, or HARD to clean out the manifold. Best to avoid it all together!
The foam serves a purpose to make the motor quieter. Other than that, nothing else I can think of.
There should be a round cut-out above the carburetor to prevent any choking action. But the piece should not be there. There should also be a "chunk-stopper" on top of the carb. It really doesn’t do much.
yes the foam is filthy oily but…not crumbling yet .
I’ll tear it out as suggested and copy the pattern and wipe all glues away… if noise becomes an issue I may ventue to glue back a fresh foam …I have my other pristine 9.5 anyway this is just another…" opportunity" I picked up π
I used the neoprene foam to pad the fat 50 motor cover on my 100 horse modified V-4. I could hear people talking in nearby boats and the sound of the water sliding by the boat, but the motor was so quiet I hit the starter a couple times while idling thinking it had stoped. . . π
