      Fleetwin,
      P/L does show the oring on the upper bearing. So I assumed that the oring was correct.
      Yes there was some rust on the lower crank seal surface. You can see where the seal was riding on the crank in the first photo and the crank seal surface is shown in the second photo. As I recall I smoothed the rusted surface a bit and let it go at that. The powerhead did not look like it was apart before.

        Parts manual for ’56 Fastwin models 15016 and 15017 definitely shows an O ring seal around the upper crank bearing. Are any of these your model numbers?

          OK, the powerhead wasn’t apart before, and there was an oring in place up top when you disassembled it, so you will be fine. The lower crank journal looks good also, you wiill have this thing purring in no time…
