Last week I was given a 1967 Evinrude Sportwin…..the much maligned shorty "turtle motor". It had zero compression in both cylinders so; expecting a blown head gasket….I pulled the head. Look at the conditions in which this engine must have run for literally the last years of it’s life. It’s amazing that it survived at all.

As the pictures show….the coolant passages surrounding the lower cylinder are completely plugged with carbon-like material that I pretty much had to carve out with a drill bit. The coolant passages in the head were the same. The coolant passage that runs down from the thermostat is STILL plugged; not sure how to go about digging it all out.

Tough little engines. Sad to see how this one got treated.

me I am more optomistic… .start cleaning it feed it some penetrating oil, soak water passages with some vinigar to clean any calcium deposits etc.. etc…
soak it again with penetrating oil and wait patiently…. retest

Aren’t these 9.5 hp motors known for exhaust leaks into the cooling passages?

No big fan of the 9.5, but there is some misinformation in that link for sure….
No way the powerhead is just a "souped up 7.5hp", and there were no crankshaft issues, except if the driveshaft splines rusted together…

Boy, that is sure a mess, hope the rings aren’t all stuck….Wondering if a leaky exhaust cover might just have played a role in this mess sending exhaust/carbon into the cooling passages…Pugetsounder may have hit on something….
