All the images of A25s I see on the net have a different shape gear case to the 1926 s/n 33562 A25 I have. Alarms bells are ringing, as the midsection of this is bronze and the gearcase is the same design as the A35/45 and I wonder if this is a bitsa. Did the A25 design change in the later years of production? Pics of the motor below.

The reason for my asking is that I need a cylinder (has blown / corroded waterways) and need to be sure that I get the right version.

Yes, it’s a long version. I wonder whether someone put an A25 powerhead on the A35/A45 leg – I’m no expert, so would that be a possible mate?

I just took a look at my A25 and A35 side by side. With out actually trying it,I would say the heads would inter-change.Have you checked to make sure your rope plate serial# matches one on crankcase? The differences between the two power heads are pretty subtle.Looking at your pics I’d say yours is definitely A25 and lower unit is from A35

Just checked the serial number (lip on the crankcase base, where the piston base mates to it?) and it’s B 7874; which makes no sense to me, as I thought the serial numbers of Johnsons were all numeric to 1959.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

The fly wheels looks to be from an A25 motor.

Thanks Gents, much appreciated; I never fail to learn something new here. It should be a fun project even if it’s 3 motors.

Pulled the cylinder off and both the piston and cylinder- updated pics.. What’s the baffle for in the port?

Spark arrestor in case of back fire. Some recommend removing them lest they come loose and cause damage.
