I have a new gasket (202580) and good baffle plate (203020) and good exhaust cover (203374).
I believe the sequence of parts installation is: gasket, followed by plate, followed by cover.
So, no gasket between cover and baffle plate.
Since there is no gasket between the plate and cover, should any kind of sealant be used?
There is a brown varnish like substance on the outside (cover side) of the pate. What is this and why is it there?
      Thanks,
      Nick

Correct on the sequence. As to the brown stuff, probably gasket cement was used before.

Use some sealer, such as 847 for the metal to metal joint. But nobody is going to come get you and toss you in the slammer if you put a gasket in there.

Frank, at my age I can’t risk the potential slammer so a gasket it is.
            Thanks,

I personally put a gasket in there.

Me three. Just did one & put a gasket because I didnt even look. Just thought one went on both sides. What were they thinking? Just bought some more gaskets off Ebay for another one Im going to do. At $3.00 per gasket I wouldn’t even think about it.

Now you guys tell me about the gasket 😥
I just put the cover back on my 7.5 Fleetwin
yesterday. I was wondering why there was
no gasket when I took it apart, but it only
showed "one" gasket on the parts diagram,
so I just gooped it up, lol.

                      Prepare to be boarded!

There was only one gasket back in the day, so you should be fine.
