is the small screen in front of the carb (behind the front part of the side air silencer) necessary for air flow/input control or was it just for bug control ???
It’s there for a reason but I’m not sure why. Maybe to help the motor run better by dampening the pulses or to help stop fuel from spraying into the silencer. Whatever it is, I’ve ran the motors with and without it and can’t really notice any difference.
An old time mech once explained to me that it was necessary to create a partial choke situation. Not sure why they couldn’t be adjusted out, but that’s what he said. I’ve always left them in.
It was put in when some of the November ’51 pilot production run engines (sent to Florida) had problems coming off an idle. It is supposed to improve intermediate speed performance. OMC used to listen to it’s cultomers. . . 😆
