My son picked up a alcohol rig and need some information. #1 what fuel pump diaphragm material should we use? #2 what kind of oil to use and how much? #3 can we use E-85 in it? The motor has a John Deere snow mobile engine converted to alky. Any info would help. Thanks gary
Gary;
Typically alky motors are set up with closer clearances and higher compression than gas motors, running gasoline without changing the clearances/compression is inviting a seized motor. Hope this helps.
Engines converted to run alcohol usually ran on methanol. E-85 is ethanol based, 15% gasoline, and would probably require different jetting. Jetting an alky motor is tricky, why bother. A long time ago the only oil that would mix with methanol was castor based, like Castrol ‘R’. There were no synthetics then. I have some Blendzall racing castor and it says on the bottle that it will "mix with all fuels". I wonder.
The motor is a John Deere Liquifier (spelling?) mounted on a stick tower with a single sliding expansion chamber. the engine is a 340 and modified for alky. There were two made for RD or RB class. One is in Mark Suter’s museum the other was purchased last year by my son we will have it at c.tine this weekend..
