A young guy brought an old 9.5 to me to see if I could help him out. It’s a 1969 Evinrude 9922S. Anyway, it sort of runs if you give it enough fuel and he seemed happy enough with that but it was making a terrible noise when you shift into forward. Reverse seems to work ok.
Kind of a long story, but this young guy helps out another fellow I know, Duncan. I spoke about Duncan in this topic too (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10129&p=52921&hilit=another+ugly+one+with+a+story#p52921). In the last couple of years Duncan’s health has really started going down hill with cancer, chemo, several surgeries, a colostomy bag, lot too much weight, etc. The guy is in bad shape. I haven’t seen him in a while but, wow, he looking rough. He brought a motor over (15 Evinrude) that I had sold him a few years back for me to check over. It wasn’t running great so while he and this young fellow talked to me I pulled the carb and cleaned it for him. Duncan says he wants to go fishing but, man, I just don’t know. Now his motor is running good though. He had let it sit since 2015 due to his health failing. Anyway, back to the young guy, Matt. Matt lives down the street from Duncan and helps him out when he can. I had been dealing with Matt separately since Duncan gave him my number but yesterday I saw the guys together and I realized that if Duncan even gets his boat hooked up it will be Matt doing it. So, I am gonna try to get Matt’s motor running and it not cost him much if anything.
This is what his LU gears look like. No lube except for greasy water in the LU when I pulled the drain.

So, he needs some new stuff. I have a LU for a 6 hp Evinrude that looks really similar. It needs some work but I think most of it is sound, would they swap?April 16, 2017 at 2:12 pm #56173Now that lower unit is really narley. I don’t think that a 6hp gear set will swap. The gear ratio is different and the 9.5 gears are a different size as well as the bearings. Looks like you are in for a complete overhaul.
April 16, 2017 at 3:07 pm #56178tried a good wirebrush job on all parts, sealing it up and re-oiling it…?

April 16, 2017 at 3:22 pm #56181Agreed. Nine times out of ten buffing with a wire wheel will remove the rust making the parts serviceable again. The OMC/BRP HI-Viscosity oil used leaves a film which helps to protect the parts from serious rusting. Polishing all of the bearing surfaces will help everything spin freely again.
If the gears are toast, ones from ’61 – ’63 OMC ten horse motors will also fit. They share the same part numbers.

I personally feel the main shaft on this one, with the rear floating gear; will be toast, and pitted badly. Yes, I agree on what you say about today’s OMC gear oil, and including Mercury’s product all have the additive in them. In fact I went with Mercury years back when I found out about their product before OMC came out with it, and have used it only now.April 16, 2017 at 5:45 pm #56197Thanks guys. No, I have not tried to clean it up at all. Due to the grinding sound in forward I assume it needed a clutch dog and maybe a forward gear but was kinda hoping I already had the things to fix him up. You can’t tell from the picture but the bearing at the rear of the shaft is completely shot. The shaft just kinda bangs around in there. I am gonna try it though. Open to all advice.
May 7, 2017 at 9:48 pm #57259Back on this one again guys. I am having a issue with spark now. I am getting good spark on the bottom cylinder but only a weak spark on the top. I have had the points off at least 5 times, swapped parts around, checked the coils twice, etc. I want to try replacing the plug wires but the throttle linkage is a bit confusing. Is there a trick to it? I have never pulled the mag plate on one of these.
May 7, 2017 at 11:33 pm #57263I redid one ( 9622a) last winter … nothing to it …I changed all the wiring points condensers etc… fires good … will go to water testing when this stupid rain stops and the sun comes out .
maybe I am missing something… throttle linkage does not need to be touched to remove the mag plate and fix the brains

May 7, 2017 at 11:55 pm #57264Ok. I am using the wrong term I guess. The linkage from the throttle control on the tiller arm to the mag plate. This motor I so nasty inside it’s hard to see but it looks like there is a bolt it pivots on and a couple other connectors.
May 8, 2017 at 1:02 am #57269I got a good look thru the gunk and it looks to be no big deal. Just a bolt and a couple of C clips. I am hoping the new plug wires help. I have a foot of new wire around here somewhere I can use for part of one.
