That is the “transmission housing”.  to fill, remove the inspection cover and fill with #62 Mobil fluid up to the small oil level screw located on the opposite side of the case. So says the Lauson manual. I researched the #62 Mobil fluid and found that it’s similar to a hydraulic fluid or a light machine spindle oil. I use the spindle oil in my motor, seems to like it just fine.

I didn’t realize Lauson even had a “shift” model.

Oh’ ya’ – shift motor, F – N – R. But what an engineers wet dream. I don’t know if they were trying to avoid patent infringement issues or if the engineering department just “got away” from the bean counters. The Lauson “transmission it built into the leg below the powerhead and contains a automotive style disc clutch and a planetary gear train for reverse. The entire thing is a elegant assembly of bearings, springs and leavers. With the planetary reverse, you only ger half speed in reverse. To make things even more complicated the gear shift lever are linked to both the transmission and the carburetor, so as to prevent overspeed in neutral and reverse. I believe that they only made this trans for a couple of years, maybe 1951 -53 … before the bean counters caught up to them.

Spindle oil =  light viscosity high quality oil used to lubricate high speed spindles on machine tools.  I use Mobil Velocite light #6

available on flea bay … in quart and gallons

The engine sump uses 30 weight, non detergent oil. About 22 ounces. Thanks for posting what the transmission needs for lubrication. I have one of these motors and appreciate the information.
