I think that it is worth while to replace the lower seal on almost any motor that has not run in a long time. Every time I remove a powerhead, I find that the o-ring is hard and brittle, likely to allow water into the engine when running.

Is it worth upgrading the o-rings to quad rings in any application. On the smaller OMC engines, the seal is not restrained by the carbon carrier in the same way that it is on the bigtwin series. Would these small applications benefit from a Quad ring?

I guess the best I can do is my own personal opinion, because I’ve never seen anything official on it. But I always used the quad rings in the carbon seal on 18hp-up through the Big Twins. Figured it couldn’t hurt. As for the smaller ones like 5.5/7.5hp I’d say the o-ring should be good enough. Once installed and located in place it doesn’t have to slide up and down on the shaft on those. Where most people screw up on those is failure to replace both the o-ring and gasket above the plate.

should any adhesive be used on the cork seal? It seems like the one I just replaced was stuck to the brass seal ring.

I use a light coating of 3M 847 between the cork gasket and the stepped washer.
