A buddy brought me a 1940 johnson LT 10 and I need to know if the tank was painted originally? It appears that it was not to my old eyes. If not i am considering cutting the tank from the rear for dent removal and then polishing it. Never tried that before and may be biting off more than I can chew. Thanks for any help. Steve

December 29, 2022 at 6:29 pm #270417Pretty sure the tank was painted dull aluminum under the decals. Does your tank still have it’s decals? You will also surely need new leather primer seals and instructions to install them. If so, contact me. I am the guy that makes them.
December 29, 2022 at 6:44 pm #270418It does have the decals. I’ll check with lacquer thinner tomorrow and see if any paint comes off.

If the decal on you motor is original, to determine the
finish on the tank when new, remove a small section
with some paint stripper. The second example is a 1937
Johnson LS. It would seem to indicate that the Johnson’s
had polished tanks at this time. That may have changed
by 1940. I suspect it was polished. If your motor still has
its original decal, this test will answer your question.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
December 30, 2022 at 2:33 pm #270438Thanks Tubs. After getting my hands on it I think there are so many dents that I am going to paint it. I appreciate all the replies
December 30, 2022 at 2:35 pm #270439It has what appears to be brass on the lower section. As I said, Im new to this. Do you use brass cleaner on this or is there something that works that you like?
