I’ve been in the process of making one good Evinrude 9.5 from three parts motors….and I thought I’d share a difference that exists between them. The 1965 that I have uses 2 springs to assist in holding the engine ….the springs would seem to take some of the stress off of the front upper rubber mount.

Although….by 1966 the springs are no longer used. I don’t know if they were ever brought back over the years the "shorty" was produced…..but they were not used in either 1966 or 1967.

What do you think? Do the motors that used the springs seem to have fewer motor mount issues? Any information is appreciated.

I don’t recall seeing those springs in my 1969.

The springs wire used with that plastic vibration damper. Springs held the motor against the damper at idle to help keep it from shaking itself to death. Actually, more to help hold it still so it would idle. They did a lousy job of doing what they were supposed to do, and the motor shook very badly and idled poorly. And the plastic vibration damper lasted about two weeks if you were lucky.

Later on, they started using the vibration dampers on the sides of the powerhead, and they made a vast difference in smoothness and how it ran and idled. Finally, a motor that you could troll with.

Matter of fact, I don’t see the plastic damper in your pictures. Motor must be more than two weeks old.
