I have had this motor laying in my garage for a long time. It belongs to a fellow that had me repair a 6 hp Evinrude for him and later bought a 15 Johnson from me. Anyway, when he purchased this motor he was told it was a 15 hp Evinrude. The guy that sold it to him wasn’t the most honest fellow I am thinking. The owner brought it to me about 18 months ago to see if I could get it running. It had low compression and was only firing on one cylinder. I put a new head gasket in it restoring the compression but could not get it to fire on one of the cylinders.
I decided to take another look at it today as I have picked up a little more experience in those months and I really couldn’t remember why I gave up on it. I checked the coils and they both were good. The condensers were mismatched. One was just wedged into the circular hole. So, I changed those out and polished the points up really good. Spark was returned. I cleaned the carb and then started it up. No water flow. The lower unit was loose. It had a brand new impeller in the pump but there were several pieces of the old impeller in there too. I hooked a hose to he up pipe and got water to flow but it feels restricted. I also used my drill to check the pump and it was squirting pretty good. But, when I started it again there was still no water flow. I guess I missed a piece.
So, the guy the owner bought it from not only passed what I think is probably a 6 or 8hp Western Auto (Chrysler) for an OMC he also left parts of the old impeller lodged in the water pump, obvious parts, likely causing it to blow the head gasket. I don’t remember exactly what he paid for this motor but I think I charged him the same amount for a real OMC 15. On top of all this, the owner is physically disabled and obviously not well off. You just can’t figure some people.

December 23, 2016 at 4:11 pm #49630I had no luck getting water to circulate through this engine. I have had this issue with a Chrysler before and Ben D. told me to replace the wear plate. It worked then so I am gonna try that before putting this one back in the corner. I looked for awhile yesterday but couldn’t find a plate to fit it. Does anyone have a line on one like this? Its a weird 3 screwed pump.
