I’m on vacation in Lac du Flambeau and have a limited tool selection with me. Trying to get the flywheel off an FD-12 (1958 Johnson) and no luck. It’s running on one cylinder and I want to do a full inspection.
October 1, 2025 at 5:18 pm #300285Trick for removing most flywheels without pullers:
back the nut off from fully tight a bit until there is a small gap between the top of the flywheel and the nut, but enough of the nut is on that you will not strip the threads on the crankshaft or mushroom the top of the crankshaft if the nut is on too far, and then give the nut/top of the crankshaft a few whacks starting with lightly and progressing till the sound turns a little bit different and the flywheel will probably jostle a bit, at which point the flywheel can be removed by hand. this has worked well for me so far without any puller.
Have you replaced the spark plug? Fixing something in the ignition system may take a lot of time away from your vacation for an inspection you could do at home if the problem is coil/condenser related.

October 2, 2025 at 2:01 pm #300294Thanks for the advice! We had tried that, without success. It’s a new-to-me motor, and I’ve never had the flywheel off yet. Pretty sure it’s not been used for many years, so has had quite a long time to fuse itself nicely…
We know we’re not getting spark on the bottom cylinder, regardless of the spark plug. I have one of those spark testers with me. It’s not all that important that we get it off this week, as I have another motor that we’re using for the week. I was just hoping to get this one running while I had some family up here – and it’s the kind of thing we enjoy playing with.

October 2, 2025 at 5:28 pm #300300if it doesn’t have spark you will have to replace something internally, and the time that takes I would advise be better spent enjoying your vacation. brute force sometimes works…..but not always.

October 3, 2025 at 12:47 am #300302When trying Waunnaboat’s method, remeber to life the motor’s flywheel up before hammering. You don’t want to bend the crankshaft. I would reccommend having someone lift the motor up only by holding the flywheel, maybe an inch or two above the softish ground (the lawn?), and have another person strike the nut. For some reason I’m thinking this hammering is the one area where it’s better not to start gently. I think it was because (apparently) the more you hammer the more the flywheel magnets demagnitize somehow. Worth verifying the latter. However, I agree that having the nut flush with, or slightly higher than, the crankshaft is a good idea to protect the threads.
Also, WillinMKE, that motor might have an opening in the flywheel that allows you to mess with the points and lubricate the cam. But for sourcing a puller, are there any tool rental places nearby? Some hardware stores rent tools.
P.S. Putting penetrating oil between the flywheel and crankshaft several minutes before trying to remove the flywheel should make things easier.
October 3, 2025 at 6:22 am #300304Get a harmonic balance puller, “might” find one at an auto parts store, do not use the 3 jaw puller… if you do and it goes south,,, you will be having a really bad day

Btw to service your oldy this book covers everything and utubes will show you how to. The inverted nylon lock nuts on mine keep the bolts from going in to far and… getting lost .
coils likely shot or condensers so replace everything incl. 7mm solid metallic strand wires ( no carbon wires)

Success, using the homemade contraption in the picture. New coils and wires in – don’t have points or condensors with us. Pulled over nicely, started on the 3rd try. Off to drag it down to the lake to see how she goes.
