This is the Forward Reverse spring from my Mark 28. See the gap in the spring? Is this OK ? Is it normal wear and tear or did someone shift without letting the engine calm down?I don’t see a crack in the spring. Please share your thoughts. Thanks , Matt.  2 pictures in Current Projects/Mark 28.

when they go it is caused by poor shimming. if shimmed correct it should be fine.

As long as it’s just a gap and not that the spring has been bent in towards the center,  it would be okay.  However,  usually,  part of the spring gets drawn in between the upper and lower halves and the sping gets bent and destroyed.  As Dave said,  that is caused by poor swimming and/or forgetting to put one washer or another back in.
