      The engine runs very well at full speed , when I start retarding the timing it starts to backfire. any ideas or suggestions.

        Try enriching the fuel air mixture.

          That does help but not fully illuminate the backfire; and then it does run rich.

            A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

              This is a new condenser but I have no idea if it’s compatible with the old one. This is a battery ignition with no magneto. Thanks for your thoughts. Not sure where I could find an original condenser for this motor any ideas there?

                  This is the closest information I could find regarding the condenser “value”.

                  All of Tubs ideas sound good, but be careful spraying carb cleaner
                  around a hot, running engine.

                  Prepare to be boarded!
