This motor came as part of a 2-motor package, and I couldn’t get it to turn over via the manual starter. I couldn’t get the cowell off due to a stuck latch, so I ended up having to drill out the latch and use a punch and hammer to drive the latch hook back into the motor compartment. I’ll say this, the first words out of my mouth when I lifted the cowel were "HOLY you-know-what," and look what I discovered….

The reason I couldn’t pull it over is the manual starter was so corroded out due to mouse pee, that the spool had split in half. The nest actually filled the entire front half too, and all the way to the top of the lid on top of the flywheel and over/under the manual starter. After 10 minutes of vacuuming/using a dust pan and hand broom, I was able to turn the flywheel about a 1/2 turn but found it hitting a ‘stop.’

Pulled what was left of the plugs (totally corroded out), and found that, of course, the motor had been left sitting in the barn for 4 years NOT with the pistons midway between TDC, so of course, one cylinder was full of mouse nest. Pulled the cylinder head, cleared out the top cylinder, and am letting everything soak overnight with fogging oil. Hoping to strap the cylinder head back on tomorrow and see if compression is still OK in the cylinder that had the mouse nest.

If compression checks out, this motor will be one of those winter projects that requires a lot of work, but will be saved from the big lake in the sky! The lower cowel was so corroded that stuff was falling out of it due to how large of holes had corroded through the bottom. The exhaust bypass cover is corroded straight through at the overboard water indicator (that L was just flopping around on it’s own in the lower pan).

Anyone else have some good picks like this?

Be very careful with that much mouse urine. There have been many instances of people getting sick due to inhalation or skin exposure to it.
You can’t really get rid of the stuff unless you completely strip the motor.

I probably would have scrapped it as soon as I opened the hood.

Cajuncook’s mud dauber motor is pretty extreme (I think it was him). I’m sure he’ll post a pic for us

A motor in that condition would have to be rare and desirable for it to be worth doing anything with.

What I’ve done in the past is use a wire brush to remove all of the white discoloration, then repaint it.

I stay clear of any dust/debris with these situations and always use mechanics gloves anyways to avoid oil/grease/contaminants. Sort of like lead paint, if it’s encapsulated, it’s not airborn.

I’ll end up replacing a lot of stuff on this motor from parts motors, but as long as the powerhead is still good, it’s still got a heartbeat.

I’ll have to post some pics once I’m done with it (if compression checks out tomorrow) this winter.

If you want to build a better mousetrap start with a zephyr or lightfour. I’ve had a dozen or so and every one has come with or attracted mice. The good news is if I have one or two in the garage the mice don’t nest in the house.

Wow…..just Wow….You are more determined than me. Mice can carry some wicked diseases, so wear a respirator and do it outside!

‘Dauby’ was such an impressive Evinrude that it even made it to the home page picture show!

I don’t know, Johnnyrude, but I think your photo is right up there with the best of them. Holy crap, so-to-speak.

                    Long live American manufacturing!

Wow, that mouse house is impressive. Mouse urine is way more destructive than the mud dauber nest.

Here are a couple of pictures of "Daubey" a 1955 Evinrude 15hp Fastwin. It was given to me and it was in a barn that had been on a gentlemen’s property for years and years. The barn was pretty old so, how long that motor sat out there was unknown to the owner of the property. One of the guys I worked with knew the owner from their Church. The owner was telling them of an old motor he found in a barn years ago when he purchased the property. My buddy told him that he knew someone who liked to work on old motors. The owner said, tell him to come pick it up or it was heading for the land fill. So, I went get Daubey and was surprised find a to mud dauber resort under the hood. Before I watered it down, I removed the carburetor and sealed off the entranced to the crankcase with a cork and masking tape. I was very careful with a hose and water to remove all those nest. Immediately after the cleaning I removed the flywheel and used a lawn blower to dry every nook and cranny. I removed the ignition plate, clean, dry, and put new coils because the old one were cracked. Cleaned carburetor and put a kit in it and put it back on. I then changed the fuel hoses.

If memory serves correct, it had 115 psi upper and lower.

Daubey, came alive after the 2nd or 3rd pull. Ran well in the barrel. Thanks reminds me, I need to reseal the lower unit, it has a drive shaft and shift seal leak. Daubey is my favorite story to tell, sorry I went on a bit.
