agree… but the cam notch must be at the roller at the start position ……is my understanding… could be wrong of course.

Your motor is functioning as it should to prevent the engine from over revving and damaging the clutch dog when shifting into forward or reverse. The other stop (that you label #1) is to prevent the engine from running too fast in reverse, and when in forward gear it prevents you from shifting from forward to neutral at too high of RPM and over revving the engine.

April 23, 2022 at 5:31 am #258788Guys I have a question are we comparing horses with mules here? That is does a rd17 have the cruise throttle setup and perhaps a different stop link setup than a Gale 25? I am 600 miles from home and my parts books right now

I sent you parts list for RDE-17 and 1956 Gale 25 hpApril 23, 2022 at 5:13 pm #258829So I went to Motorhead meet today and asked.
I am now convinced that when in neutral the shifter lever should be at the the beginning of the stop link assembly.(number 2)
When in reverse the shifter lever should be at the second notch (number 1)
If the shifter lever does not do what I wrote above.
That means that some time in the motors life the shifter lever got bent.
If I encounter a motor that shifter does not do the above I am just going to leave it as it.
I do always hook up the vacuum switch.
Thank all for your patience -
