Have to replace all of the rusty ball bearings in a 1971 Mercury 9.8HP lower unit.
It looks like previous owner never changed the oil, and water had gotten in sat which caused the problem. I know that you can still find OEM bearings, but the prices are high, as compared to getting them through my initial search of bearing houses.
Any suggestions on brand and type of bearings to use…. i.e. SKF, Stainless etc. Also any place that anyone has bought from, which had good prices and service?

I’m lucky enough to have a bearing supply house nearby, where I buy from the owner face to face, eyeball to eyeball. I’ll bet you do too.

Chinese bearings are dirt cheap on ebay, amazon…. There is a lot of bitching about them but in my experience they are likely to be good enough for normal everyday use.

When I finally got all of the old bearings out, they had all of the original manufactures (MRC and Torrengton) model numbers on them. With A quick Google search I was able to find them and EBay had the best prices. One prop shaft bearing listed for $36.22. I was able to find it for $6.00. So a little digging around on the internet was well worth it.
