Dave, great pics and a complete motor. At least I have seen a set of lower pans now if I decide to pull the trigger on the one I’m looking at. Wonder if I could ever find a set of lower cowls if I buy the one I’m looking at? Can’t wait to see how yours turns out.

September 4, 2015 at 5:56 pm #23202Great looking motor, Dave!! Nice find!!
Perhaps you’ll have it ready for one of our Pine Tree Boating Club meets this fall.
Would love to see (and hear!!) it.

September 5, 2015 at 1:48 am #23244Thanks for the great feedback! I am excited about having this motor, just because it is a bit different than anything I have ever used or owned.
This one will likely be a winter project, so don’t look for it too soon Bob, but it will show up one of these days, and I can race Bud!
I also made a deal this week on a 25HP West Bend Shark, electric start, with original tank and controls, so time to reel it in for a bit, if I want to keep living here!
September 5, 2015 at 3:45 pm #23289I wouldn’t change a thing other than getting it running and cleaning it up a bit. As they say, "they’re only original once!" I am officially jealous of you and doubt if I’ll ever see one for sale especially within reasonable distance from my house.
September 5, 2015 at 3:55 pm #23290Great score! I think you are going to like that motor, especially it being a twin!
September 6, 2015 at 12:20 am #23301The twins are harder to find than the singles. Great score!
September 6, 2015 at 1:18 am #23306You guys are getting me excited about this one. I will have to check for spark and put some gas in it and see what happens. Don’t even need to fill the test tank, er, bucket, whatever!
Updates will follow as they occur.
September 6, 2015 at 1:50 am #23311The flywheel has a built in puller and you can spiff up the points and test the condenser very easily – all my Bendix motors have had good coils. I seem to recall there is a shut-off wire that likes to get frayed and short. And mind my earlier note, modern sparkplugs are too long and will hit (and break) the bake-o-lite insulators inside the cowl. I’ve got some NOS oldies in mine (Think they are J-8s)
FYI, my TMD came from Lubec – maybe both were sold by the same dealer!
To those who doubt they will ever find one – my Bendix SM came from a yard sale that was about 1 mile from my house. In my area of CT all the outboards that turn up have been used in Long Island Sound and are totally crusty. But the SM was mint with only the typical broken skeg – I am tankful to a neighbor who visited the yard sale and called me. The motor was a whopping $40 – the seller was so happy the motor was going to someone who was interested in it (it had been his dads) that he through in a nice rolling stand and 2 brass Michigan props for OMC 10 & 18s. That was the icing on the cake, it was the best tag sale outboard deal I’ve ever gotten!

You guys in the North and North East have all the cool old stuff at yard sales. In North Eastern KY there weren’t many places around to use an outboard until the ’50s and ’60s when the Corps Of Engineers started making lakes and building boat ramps on the rivers. That is why old iron is scarce around here.
