Greetings most esteemed and eminent AOMCI members,
I am new here and looking to tie up some loose ends on this motor so I can see if it will run.The motor is in nice condition and seems to have good compression (not knowing what good compression feels like on one of these motors).
Haven’t had to do much too it but I need some help on a few issues.-First is the manual calls for J-10 spark plugs but this one has J-8’s.
-The cylinder hold down nuts were loose, but I don’t know the proper torque for them.
-Most curious, there is a wire connected to the throttle lever. It comes from the magneto or points area and I can think of no logical reason why it is hooked up here. There is a screw,2 fiber washers,a spring, steel washer and a nut that goes thru the throttle lever and bracket – the wire is hooked up to this. Is this correct or is this a ground wire that is suppose to be hooked up somewhere else?
Tried to post a picture but couldn’t figure out how..Thanks for any help you can give.
BTW I’m John in North Florida. I also have a 12 ft. Sea King aluminum boat from the 60’s(?) that this will go on.October 26, 2015 at 8:30 pm #26112Hi John and welcome aboard!
That wire might have been added as a kill switch by a previous owner as I don’t see anything like it in the parts book. My SMD doesn’t have it and it shuts off by moving the speed control to the far left. Maybe a member with a TMD can explain it better.
Here’s a link to the Bendix site. Check out the manuals and patents for diagrams.

October 26, 2015 at 9:20 pm #26117Thanks Cyber Sheriff,
I was all over that website and couldn’t find this assembly. I have also searched every link and picture I could find, but as things go I couldn’t get a look at that throttle link area to confirm or dismiss this set-up.The wire appears to be original for the motor..but it may have been shortened to hook up where it is,and it doesn’t look like it would be a very good shut off switch either.
We’ll see if someone else chimes in.
Thanks!October 27, 2015 at 6:42 pm #26146I don’t think the TMD typically had a shut-off, unless it works by moving the mag lever all the way to stop where it hits a ground-out contact. (My TMD is not easily accessible right now but I’ll try to look later)
The SM and SMD models should have a kill switch on the tiller handle – many of the motors I see have these missing. (This casting is different from the twins that have the tiller mounted to a front carry handle so the twins don’t have this) It looks like this:
BTW, there was another thread we discussed the sparkplugs – maybe it was on the old board? The originals on my TMD were J-8J Champions – the modern replacements are too long and will cause the bake-o-lite insulator covers on the inside of the cowl doors to break. Best to use a vintage J-8J or use one of the shorty CJ-8 plugs so you don’t damage the insulators. Also, I recall a discussion that some TMDs may have used H-10J Champions – however all the motors I’ve seen used the J-8Js.
Did a video of running my TMD a couple years ago – if it is of help: here is the link:

I have watched that video,it was pretty good but frustrating at the same time! When you opened the side cover you almost showed the part of the throttle lever where this wire attaches but not quite..This connection is made by a screw which goes thru the lever and slide bracket but there is an insulated collar which indexes the bracket and lever so that no contact is made if the lever is slid all the way down..
There is no place that looks like a kill switch was mounted on this motor. The tiller handle does not have any threaded holes, etc.
I need to figure out how to upload a picture, that would make this a lot easier!
October 27, 2015 at 8:24 pm #26148Well,I can’t find how to post a pic, does someone have a link to the explanation?
October 27, 2015 at 8:40 pm #26149I sent you a PM with my email – let me know if you didn’t get it.

I won’t even tell you the stupid things I do on a day to day basis. You’d think "I" invented the face palm!
