      quote Billy J:

If you have zero interest in bigger engines why get involved with them. If you like smaller engines that’s what you should concentrate on. Unless it’s a highly desired large model it’s not going to command a lot of money so fight the urge to buy yourself extra work. I myself like the 25 to 40 horse models because that’s what my boat size requires. I have all the specific models that are of interest to me so now I pass on anymore that come up.You have to fight that urge to buy mediocre motors that you probably are not going to ever do anything with. My two cents. Bill,

I was very interested in the Johnson 18hp he had as a package deal. I got them both for $50. You would pass on that deal???? Further to that he has a few connections on other small motors, again a point of interest to me. I also plan on attending some AOMCI outings once I officially join and I may just trade it there, or possibly put it in the free pile. I don’t even own a boat… didn’t know it was a pre-requisite to be a member. Further to that I like to tinker and if I get this thing running as the previous owner said it would, I would have the feeling of accomplishment knowing I got another piece of history ready for the next owner, be it a give away, a trade or a sell. Further to that I would think that any members of this club would welcome the thought of another new person who takes an interest in the hobby. Thanks for your comment but to be honest I get enough advice from my wife with regard to this new found passion for me. Who knows maybe I will grow to embrace the big bitches as much as I like the small ones…..It is called broadening your horizons or having an open mind. No offence taken or meant to be given, I am a big boy and I just wanted to explain why I would get involved with something that has zero interest to me.One final point, I dont find any motor that has survived 50+ years, mediocre, they are historical relics that deserve to be at least restored to running condition. This is a new found passion for me and I will continue to do this until they pry my wrenches from my cold dead hands LOL

Hello Punchbug. In your original post you asked for generic advice if you should buy motors you had zero interest in on anticipation of selling or trading for other motors.I have been doing this for many decades and gave you my honest thoughts in my reply. You did not mention any particulars or details of 2 engines for $50.00 or that this was a new found passion of yours.I can appreciate your enthusiasm and by all means there are always deals that are to good to pass up. In your reply to me it sounds like you already have the answer you seek to your original post. So give it a shot if you want to pick up some engines for trade it’s a cheap enough hobby. I am sure in time you will come with the right balance for your hobby. Regards Bill,
