Bitter sweet day. Had my 1929 Lockwood Silent Chief out. It started easily and ran great. 5 miles upstream I tried to idle down, which it didn’t like. Adjusting the jet didn’t seem to help so I throttled back up. That is when fuel vapour in the exhaust ignited and exploded. Hope is not lost. I have a spare set of exhaust castings that should fit and a friend who had volunteered to make the T pipe. Just another day in the life of an antique outboarder.

OUCH!! I know that hurts even if you have some spare parts available. Hope it turns out OK. Keep us posted on repairs.

Sorry to hear that, just tell everyone that it was some backyard mechanics attempt at making it a racing motor.

Glad to hear that you have the castings. I have one of those that I have to get running and find a couple of parts, well at least the linkage parts to hook the throttle to the carb. I like your boat, must be Canadian with all those fenders over the sides.

I’m not sure what you are asking, Walt. What heads are you asking about? The 1928 Chief has blind cylinders. I haven’t decided the fate of my 28 Chief. We were thinking of casting a new cottage racer style exhaust.

I’ve never even considered that before. Is it a trait to some older motors?

Dang, didn’t know that was even possible! Are the castings thin or brittle on these motors?

I don’t know if this is a common trait of the Silent Chief. Some Lockwood experts have claimed they have never seen this happen before. I can say that missing exhaust pieces are common on the Silent Chief. In fact, one of the exhaust castings on my 28 turned out to be a recasting. The castings appear robust enough for the application.
