I just received an Email about the Boatinfo site that I am sure we have all used at one point in time. As I am sure you are aware the site has been down. Here is the response I got from the site owner. Is there anything that AOMCI or any of our members can do to help get this site up again? Maybe a collaboration with Boatinfo which would provide us with a higher level of access to the site in exchange for our assistance? Just tossing it out there to start the conversation.
" Hi Bill
Unfortunately, the site has been down for a little while now. due to issues with the hosting company, Bluehost.
The host took it down last year as well, as they wanted more money claiming the site had too much traffick, and I had to pay for nonsense like dedicated IP adresses and what not. This year, I payed for the hosting in september, and shortly after Bluehost took the site down for performance issues, again.
This was almost two months ago now, and we did strike a deal on a VPS (virtual server), and they migrated the site and brought it back again after about a week, managing to loose all the Yanmar manuals in the process when they migrated it.
Then after keeping it up for just a few days, Bluehost decided to take it down again, now claiming a dedicated server was the only viable option, which would cost quite a bit of money, and renegging on the previous deal we made.Needless to say, this is all very frustrating, especially since I’ve never made a cent of Boatinfo, and I just haven’t had the time to start negotations with Bluehost again on what to do to get the site up again.
Bluehost seems to not want to host the site at all, and it’s a big site, 40 gigabytes and 200k files, and it’s been so many years since I made it, that it’s not going to be easy to move it to another host either.Hopefully I’ll get the site up again shortly, I was going to contact Bluehost next week when I have some more time available, and see what my options are.
Thanks for enjoying the site though, it really does make all the difference that people actually find the site useful, even if it is quite outdated and old now.

November 26, 2017 at 3:11 pm #67953is this something AOMCI could fund … in part and redistribute the cost into the annual membership fee..?
Joining AOMCI has priviledges 🙂
November 26, 2017 at 3:47 pm #67954I think this is a good idea. There are a lot of manuals and such posted in and around the AOMCI sites two boards. Any possible way to pull everything together?

November 26, 2017 at 5:03 pm #67956Food for thought but I stop doing business with anyone that tries to ‘ransom’ what we are doing. It sure sounds like they saw you would pay them so are now squeezing you again. If you give in to their demands you can probably expect more of the same down the line. Maybe no matter how troublesome, it is time to move on to a new host. AOMCI may want to help with a move but definitely should not with staying where they are. My opinion only.

The ISP should be able to provide stats about how much bandwidth the site is actually consuming.
