Compression fittings should be easy to take apart and reassemble. But if you are talking about the tapered pipe threads, like where it screws into the tank, yes they are designed to wedge together tightly, and generally also need a sealer.
Yes, compression fittings do wear from repeated disassembly and retightening. It is the sleeve that wears. You can see the groove at each end of the sleeve. Some grooving is normal (the "compression" in the description). But deep mashing of the ends of the sleeve is not good.
