I’ve never had any trouble with the points made in Turkey either, but my latest batch came in a BRP bag labeled “Made in USA”. This was the first set I had any trouble with, and it was the same issue with the points not opening correctly. No idea who is making them for BRP now but the quality sure went downhill in a hurry.

Very few outboards are run enough hours to wear the pivots, fatigue the springs, etc. (The deterioration in quality also applies to automotive points.) It is not really necessary to have the contact points smooth and shiny but I always go for it. Only takes a few minutes and makes it easier to set the gap properly.
Standard Motor Products used to sell mostly good quality points. Anyone tried them? P/N S9-444

That part number doesn’t look like an OMC universal point set,
and I don’t see any reference on the page to outboard motors.
Do they make points for outboards? It would be nice if they did….
actually sounds like they have a quality control department!https://ecatalog.smpcorp.com/STD/#/vehicles/parts/num/S9-444?type=s
Prepare to be boarded!

November 17, 2020 at 4:58 pm #221063They used the same points in nearly all models that had points for a lot of years. If you can’t clean up the points you have, it’s nice to have a few parts motors laying around. Points used in most motors from the 1950s into the 1970s were still used in the 2 HP in 1990.
