A friend of mine in regional NSW Australia has been fortunate enough to find and purchase a Caille 5 Speed Outboard in complete and original condition. He’s a hit and miss engine guy and this is his first outboard, so he’s excited and nervous at the same time. I have offered to take it off his hands 🙂

The only thing that has him a little concerned at the moment is that the leather strap has come away from the recoil assembly. Not a big deal, however he was hoping to see some photos of a dis-assembled starter before he proceeds to pull his down.

Any help would be much appreciated.

      Thanks & regards,
      Spiro

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

I have a running example of that motor on display in my living room that I restored many years ago. I also had to replace the leather pull starter. Not in the mood to take it apart for photos but Tubs post above should help a lot.

Thank you all, your responses are much appreciated, including yours Richard lol

I’ll pass on the patent doc, and hopefully that will suffice.

If however others have photos to share, that you would be fantastic

              Kind Regards,
              Spiro

I also have a Caille with recoil starter and had to replace the leather strap as it was not in what I thought usable condition. I replaced strap many years ago and do not remember just how it is done but would say it was not a difficult job. My Caille is one of the very late RBMs they produced, probably in the early 1920s. It has the magneto commonly found on the Caille Liberty single motor. Caille offered that magneto as an option in the ’20s and it was more expensive than their flywheel magneto. I had to have magneto rewound but it now has super great spark.
