OMC/BRP P/N 439074. Not sure what the Sierra 18-xxxx number would be.

The Sierra number is 18-7010, or 18-7024 works too, but has a few extra parts that fit some newer motors, but the 439074 OEM kit gets you a float with an ethanol-resistant coating. No float in the Sierra kits. If all you need is a float, the number is 375792.

Why does the 439074 kit come with this coated float instead of the floats used in other OMC kits like the 439071 or 396701?

I’m guessing they never tooled up a mold to change that one from cork to plastic, probably because the float in the 439074 kit was only used approximately through the 1960s, where 439071 and 439073 kits use the same float, and that float was used in production up through 2005. Molds cost thousands of $$$, and to tool up for motors not in current production doesn’t make economic sense.

I’m not sure what float is in the 396701 kit.

I like that they designed some newer carbs to accept the same floats as some older motors, so we can retrofit. The same float on my 1991 15 HP fits my 1958 18 HP, even though the carbs and kits are much different (439071 and 439073).

Guess that must be the case. Just seems strange to be using a cork float again – hope it really is ethanol-resistant.

The old shellac coated ones only lasted fifty years, but alcohol eats shellac. The new cork floats have something other than shellac on them. Of course there is the chance you may get an old NOS one.

Those carb kit #439074 & #439075 have increased in price recently. They do have different parts for different year motors. Talking with BRP supplier to get a kit to fit all models. Just a few parts differences and only one kit would work. The 40 hp motor of this style was built until 1986 as a commercial model. The style carb changed to a TR type carb around 1979? That is the carb that takes kit #396701 Outboardnut2 mentions. The float #382363 (18-7210) from that kit can be modified slightly to use in your older motors. It is the Nytril material. Again, why OMC/BRP have not done this is baffling?
Hope that helps untangle some of the confusion.

Some of the differences in the two kits are:

6 packing washers (#307583) vs 2. Later carbs had high speed jets and didn’t require the 4 extra packing washers.
2 different gaskets for the air box vs the plastic face plate.
2 different length filter socks for the fuel pump? This is redundant as you get a filter with the fuel pump rebuild kit. Better left out of the kit or purchased separately. JMHO to reduce cost!

I’m sure I am forgetting something, but I presented all of this as a compromise for one kit at a better price with the newer style float. Not sure where we are at this point?
