A guy I know has a 1963 Gale 5hp (5D22) without carburator. He asks me if I can supply him…
Could he use one of the following that I already have in my stock:
Well, you would think so, but actually there are enough differences to kill the deal. Mixture needles might be wrong length, and for sure the choke actuating lever is totally different. I think the 5.5 may be a tad larger venturi also. But that probably would only result in getting a tad more power. The jury is still out on that size question.
You could test your motor with that carb and the cowling off, so you could just see if it runs. Check and see if you can borrow it, so you don’t possibly spend money on a bad motor. Typically, if you get a motor with a carb missing, then it’s likely that the carb went to a "better" motor.
That’s not the situation… The guy who has the Gale without carb is not near me… and it’s not a motor I want to buy… He just asked if I had one fitting his motor…
He told me his motor is very good shape, except the carb is missing… it seems he checked everything, compression, magneto, impeller, etc…but he’s far away from me… we’ll see….
