I was going through an Evinrude-Elto model-year guide that I possess that differs from most of the other Evinrude guides that have been posted or published. I refer to it as my “Jim Webb” document because it is stamped with his address and has a lot of data in it that doesn’t appear anywhere else.
One of those items (two actually) is listed as models 486 and 487. Those model numbers are noted as “Carlton” 4 hp motors belonging to the 1933 model year. 486 is a standard Carlton, 487 is a Carlton with underwater exhaust. Since 1933 was the first year for Evinrude using an underwater exhaust, whatever a “Carlton” was likely represented a current model motor. Sounds like a rebadged motor meant for some a company of business that never amounted to anything. it was in the depression era so who knows what they were up to. Anyway, a quick Google search of “Carlton” reveals nothing. Anybody ever seen or heard of this “Carlton”? It would probably look like a typical 1933 Evinrude Fisherman or Sportwin.
