I am having trouble with this motor. The impellers a have 18-3001 and seem to thick.Pump gets tight when I put together. Housing clean, pin installed new seal and gasket.I have tried sanding impeller and still gets tight. Do I hhave the wrong impeller? Also the base gasket might be wrong. I see two different ones at Laings. I have the one with the round flap if you know what I mean.I can’t find a parts breakdown, only for 5 1/2 later models. Please help me.

Your answer might reside in the thread below. Relating to the “shock absorber” used in those engines.

Try turning the driveshaft while tightening the water pump housing screws without the impeller installed. The shaft should spin freely and if it starts to get tight, the shock absorber has probably stretched and is binding on the water pumps bearing housing. The shock absorber should measure 6 11/16″ and can be pressed or hammered back down to that length. If the shaft still spins freely, yeah, you probably have an impeller issue. Try some lube in the housing to see if it makes a difference.
