Back to the CD-19 I picked up this spring. After all the usual stuff; ignition, impeller, reseal lower unit, etc… I got it to start but only with the throttle advanced maybe halfway. It seems too hard to turn and it isn’t pumping water. Maybe the shock absorber? I am guessing here as I have never had this issue before. I have walked past this one long enough. I haven’t touched it since May when it won the staring contest. 🙁 But, time to tackle it again. It’s way too good looking a motor to just sit.

I am gonna go the shock absorber route unless you guys direct me elsewhere. I will get the lower unit off for now.

Once you have the gearcase off, try roping it over. That will help narrow it down.

I can tell when the shock is bad when I am trying to adjust the points with the plugs out using the timing fixture. Some can be so tight hard as heck to turn the crank! When they get tight enough no way will they start anymore.

Cannot see how that would affect the water pump though if it ran at half throttle and wouldn’t pump? THat is likely a different issue all together.

Ok. Powerhead and LU are off. I removed the shock absorber and can’t see anything that looks broken. I have read several threads about them becoming too long to function correctly. Maybe?

I can turn it fairly easily now with my fingers. Definitely easier.

Measure it. What is the length? Any rubbing evidence on the bottom of bearing plate?

Seems like I remember it being unusually stiff when I was setting the points. Been a few months since I worked on it though. I will put some compressed air through the cooling system while I have it down.

The shock absorber is 6 3/4.

That is right where it is supposed to be, maybe a touch less at 6 11/16. YOu can put it in the vice to shorten it a touch.

Was it rubbing on the plate above it?

It looks like it may have been. Looks a little scraped.
