About to effect repairs on a relative’s motor. Issue they say is "it dies when shifting into reverse." They did have a clutch dog replaced in 2014 when "it wouldn’t shift into reverse."
Before I take the gearcase apart, any other less invasive things to look at? I’m not forgetting a failed safety switch or linkage or something else am I?
Thanks for any advice.

My first thought was the shock absorber in the lower unit. It is effectively the bottom portion of the driveshaft, located under the water pump base. They have a habit of breaking and expanding, binding things up under load.
I guess we all jump to that conclusion. But hey you would think that would be more likely to happen when shifting into forward. I’d say it is tear-down time. Look for stuff like worn or tight bushings
It might have fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft and it turns into a big knot when going in reverse. Pull the prop and have a look before doing anything drastic.
