Hello.  I’m thinking of selling or trading a 4ks racer I have and before I sell it I would like to know it’s value.  I’ve posted before about it.

It has a great paint job apart from a small area right about flush with the transom bracket but on the back(propeller) side of the tower, which is slightly discolored and damaged because of accidental exposure to some abrasive chemicals.  The ignition system(Bendix k) needs to be completely redone, and I do not know the condition of the propeller.  The decals are basically non-existent because the guy I bought it from had the bright idea of leaving a fully restored motor outside for a couple of years, which through some miracle did not really damage the paint but probably is why the coils went bad(mold).  The motor turns over great and feels like it has good compression(although I do not have numbers).  serial no 161.  The carb is in OK condition, but the adjustment dials are a bit damaged.  It does not have the lower cowlings, but I do not know if this was a factory thing or it just lacks it.  If one were to put new decals on it, clean the carb, and fix the ignition system, it would probably make for a decent looking motor.

Overall, what would be a fair value to sell it at, even if it is just a somewhat uneducated ballpark estimate?  I don’t imagine they are easy to find, but given that it is 8 HP, I don’t imagine that this would be any more/less desirable than most racers?  I don’t know much about racers and I only bought it for a cheap price with the thought that it might be a resell-able Michigan wheel prop on a regular motor, without knowledge that it was actually a racer.

      Thanks.

That would be a model 4k-S, made in 1949, and was 7.9 HP. In 1951, It was called a 4L-S, still 7.9 HP. In 1951-52, with a redesigned engine block, it was a 4L-S-1F, and produced 8.5 HP. Specs on sheet attached – click on it or print it to make it big enough to read. I doubt enough of those change hands to establish a price. The 8.5 HP model that replaced it is more desirable. The most sought-after racing Champion is based on the 16 HP sold for class B hydroplane racing, and is worth considerably more. If it can be demonstrated running, My “uneducated guess” is around $500to an avid collector. My opinion – others?

I’ll try to put some pictures in later or tomorrow if I remember.

I apologize for the low quality (in my opinion) of the photo.  It was just a random photo I had in my files.  The paint job is decently good and very consistent in all areas except that one spot near the transom bracket and the areas where the decals had been worn away due to weather, Which are just slightly darker by a barely noticeable difference.
