Making great progress on restoring my Champion 1J. Most recent set back came as I started on the piston. Came apart fine.  Now I need to replace the wrist pin retainer clips. Any suggestions on where to source them.

Tried to reuse old ones. Could not get it back in. Messed it up trying. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Also, still haven’t mastered the trick of getting the clips back in.

Are they the “wire” ring clips? Didn’t see any on McMaster, but would a regular
internal clip like these, work, if you could find the correct size?

Yes, it is the wire type. See picture.

Even if I can find them, I haven’t developed the skill to get them back in. Messed one up already. That’s why I need replacement.

The internal type would be wonderful, I have ring pliers. Have seen that I should not do that, as wire fits in a round slot and the internal type are square. I’m open to that, but worry about throwing a hand grenade into the cylinder.

I’ve struggled with those E clips at times too.
Usually I use a needle nose pliers, grabbing the center, insert the open end of the clip into the
groove and twist the pliers and hence clip, so it collapses a little and then push it in place.
There’s odds and ends on the Net if you search “wrist pin E clips”, but you’d have to know the size.

G clips are a bit tricky to say the least. BEFORE starting put on eye protection. They will FLY if they get loose while being pressed into piston…one left a grease spot dead center on lens of my glasses. (polycarbonate actually)  I am sure the real pros have tools and techniques unknown to most in hobby, That said,,, I will share a method that usually gets the job done. I will warn you TOOLS are involved… probably tools you can aproximate from stuff already cluttering up your work area.

Tool #1 a wood handle scraper  Tool #2 a short piece of brass rod with a square end the same diameter as piston pin Press the end of G clip into grooves in piston pin hole, use the rounded end of wood handle to force the G clip into hole, then use blunt end of brass rod to seat clip in groove. Be very aware that C clip is compressed and ready to fly until it is firmly seated in the grove. Groove should be cleaned if neededl  I ASSUME that if needed G clips from other motors with same diameter piston pins might be suitable.

Will pose and post photos to illustrate later. About all the instruction a manual provides is “reassemble in reverse order”

Note: there may be a better way. It took a couple tries to get the G clips to cooperate.

Why brass tool? Because I had brass stock, easy to machine and reasonably durable.
