I have a 1j and am trying to get to the carb.I can’t get the front cover off. It seem it is held by a post, about center. Do I have to remove the power head to get it to release? or maybe loosen the bolts and try to raise it about 1/2 inch?
February 12, 2021 at 5:35 pm #230339was able to wiggle carb off.
February 13, 2021 at 5:53 pm #230465As you may already know, the Champion 1J has a couple cool features. There are no reeds. The back of the crankshaft is shaped to open and block off the carb at the appropriate times as it rotates. The water pump impeller is cast aluminum and will last forever unless run in salt. There is no telltale water outlet to know if the pump is working, but once started, rev it briefly once, if it was started at very slow speed, to get the water flowing, after that initial rev (happens automatically if started with throttle on “start” or above) at idle the impeller is assisted by syphon action of the water going down the outlet tube. Note you can’t see the water discharge because it is discharged through the exhaust port above the prop. If you take the lower unit off, be sure the water tubes going up and down next to the driveshaft don’t get bent so the driveshaft rubs holes in them. If this happens, they are easily replaced with copper tubes with flares on top.
I can get mine idling so slow that I can stop the motor by slapping the palm of my hand down on the rope sheave (don’t try this on other motors that don’t have a smooth , polished sheave!), and then I can start it again at the same speed with only 1/2 turn of rope.
DaveFebruary 14, 2021 at 2:09 pm #230631thanks for the info. I’ve had it running and now it won’t start. pulled and cleaned the carb. Today it’-1 outside and 36 in my shop. too cold for my fingers to work.It idled low before I got to messing with the carb. low speed needle in to richen, out to lean?
February 16, 2021 at 12:28 am #230949Usually the American carb needles adjust fuel so turning the low speed needles in would lean it and out would richen it.
February 18, 2021 at 7:07 pm #231182Put the high speed carb knob around 6 or 7, and hold the spring-loaded choke down with your left thumb as you pull the starter rope with your right hand. If necessary, try the throttle between start and fast and all the way up on fast. The exact carb adjustment doesn’t matter much for getting it started because the choke is pulling it way richer anyway, but if the high speed carb needle is too lean the choke can’t get it to suck enough gas to start it. Some of these have a small brass screw horizontal at the bottom center of the carb bowl. That is a carb drain. Back the screw out and see if clean gas drains out.
Check the simple stuff first – maybe the spark plug got wet or fouled.
