Hello. I ended up recently buying a champion, and I need some help identifying. The main reason I ended up buying it is because of the prop, which I believe to be a Michigan wheel prop due to it being made out of brass and having a faster shape and pitch. I will try to send some pictures of the motor itself, which I cannot seem to identify at the moment. on the inside of the prop (facing the LU), it is marked K46, but there are no other markings on the prop. The motor is a twin cylinder, has recoil, and based on the size, having direct drive, and compression, I would guess it to be from the 4k or 4L series? The lower unit does not look like any sort of racer, so I assume that this was just a stock motor with a faster prop? It had a cosmetic restoration from some owner a while back, but I do not know what the mechanical condition is as I just picked it up, but I am sure that some more questions regarding this will eventually arise.

August 31, 2025 at 10:54 pm #299512I just looked at it more, and I found that it is a 4K block with a 4Ks transom clamp and possibly lower unit? I should also note that the markings on the prop are on the Outside(facing away from LU) of the propeller. The numbers on the block, exhaust protrusion thingy, and the very top of the LU where it attaches to the block above the transom clamp assembly all are labeled 4K…., but do not have matching numbers (all are in the low hundreds, which could mean something?). The lower unit does look awfully blocky for a racer, if it has a racing LU.

September 1, 2025 at 8:54 pm #299538I attached some photos of the LU, serial number(s) and prop. I hope I rescaled them correctly. more pictures of the other two serial numbers on different parts will be attached in my next post.

September 1, 2025 at 9:11 pm #299549does anybody have advice on getting the stator plate off of the motor. it moves very something on the advance/retard axis but will not come up, even with dilligent pulling and light taps with a hammer. I am not sure if there is something with the magnets being on the inside of the coils rather than the outside on the flywheel causing this? Coils are both moldy and need to be replaced. Does anybody have advice on how to replace them? They look very similar to the military coils to some extent, so I was thinking that there could be some way to replace them with military coils?

September 1, 2025 at 9:14 pm #299550here is a picture of the motor with the gas tank, propeller, and recoil taken off to access stator plate (did not come with lower cowlings) if for some reason that helps with identification

The 4K model/serial number is “stamped” into a part – if I remember right, it’s on the port side of the transom clamps or on some metal near that. It is stamped into the metal, not upraised. Below is a model list that includes specs for the 4K. Click on it or print it to make it big enough to read.
