The old Evinrude spark plug data shows that my 1937 Evinrude 4209
      uses Champion Jl-15 spark plugs.
I’ve never heard of those, and I find no used or NOS photos of one.
One reference suggest that the plug number may be J “L” -15, and not J “1” -15,
and that the more modern replacement would be a Champion D-14.

Not sure of the “shortest” 18 mm, “mid heat range” plug readily available is, ???
but it would be nice to have a stash of them.

Is it a JI-15?  (Letter “I”).   The Champion site below calls the JI-15  a #514 in their new numbering system.

And below is the plug – note at this link, scroll down and they also call it a D-14:

The number on the website for the champion version of the Ji-15 is 514, not 847.  847 was the number for a replacement for the J-8J which was discussed in the forum I started.    The D-14 seems to have the same champion part number as the Ji-15 on the champion website.  The D-14 has the right thread size and gap, but it is a bit cold at a rating of 14.  If you can find a hotter plug, you might be able to prevent excess carbon buildup.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake – I corrected my post.  The links I posted are correct.

For a hotter plug, there is a D-16,which I have used in the past to replace Champion #7 plugs on post-war  Champion outboard motors.  Probably new number for the D-16 too!

Thanks. I test ran the motor today with some medium heat range AC plugs
I had, as they were the shortest I could find, so as not to be an issue
with the front cowl / cover.
