A happy and prosperous new year all!
I have a 1956 Champion 4n-d outboard that I’m working on now. I believe somebody has already been into this motor as there seems to be binding at the magneto when you try to rotate it. Should there be a brass washer (2 1/2"X3") between the magneto plate and the block? This is an Eiseman mag and I don’t have another one like this to use for reference. There may also be a couple small parts missing like washers that might be contributing to the binding. Thanks, John C

Don’t remember if I’ve posted this for you already, 😕 so here it is again ! What version of the mag is on the Champion?

Well, I messed up. It’s a PHELON mag. Model F-514 (has a Z stamped at the end). Would that work better?

Hard to tell, what with the way they did the layout. But I don’t see a washer.

Thanks Frank. That’s what I’m looking for. Now to figure what’s causing the binding.

Well, I finally got things to work right. Just a matter of getting those two plates under the mag plate to fit together just right. Now to get new coils for this motor. Is there any pros or cons on using either OMC or Phelon coils?

I suppose one could argue cost, fittment, availability, durability, and a host of other opinionated things. But one thing you should know, if you don’t already: The Phelon laminated cores are ground to fit the plate, and are not interchangeable from one motor to the next, or even to swap positions on the same motor. At least not without some possible re-working. So, keep them in their original positions.

I have run into fitment problems with laminations before so I know of what you speak. Even when trying to place them back from their previous location. I will most likely go with the phelon coils this time. Usually i have some spare used omc coils i save for the less common brands.
