      I think this may be a Champion. Looks like the carb goes
      on the side of the engine. All I found is a serial number,
      28754. I’ve never seen an outboard with this strange
      looking screened, water intake funnel.
      Model and approximate year would be great!

        Early 30’s Johnson? The water scoop was added by a previous owner. J- 70?

            Did Johnson make a newer single cylinder engine
            than the J-70? Photos of the LU don’t look like
            mine?

              Yup. J-70 was 1934 J-75 1935 J-80 was 1936. In 1936 and 1937 they made the 100 and 110 that used the same powerhead as the J motors but has an underwater exhaust and thermo-syphon cooling instead of the piston pump.

                Thanks Kevin! Mine appears to be a J-80 then.
                Here’s a photo of the other side of mine
                that makes me a true believer!
