I have recently acquired a Champion outboard motor and am trying to find out the year it was made and any other information about it such as size, parts availability, manuals and even if it is even worth restoring. I am currently fixing up a 1949 Mercury KF5 Super 5 to put on my fishing boat this summer and would like to use this Champion as next winter’s project. The markings on the cylinder of this Champion is 4G 30. Can anyone help me identify it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bill M.

I owned a Champion for a short time and found that this site was a good starting point to decipher the models and who actually made them:

Posting a picture of your motor here will most likely elicit a lot of information.

        Champion has a complex history.

The model number and serial number is generally stamped in the front, near the top of the transom bracket or lower area of the powerhead assembly. They made several ‘G’ models in 1941.
Motor model number/condition/completeness/rarity/desirability determines the path to take : Either preservation, or restoration, or repair & use, or use as a parts motor.
