Hi, I have an old Champion outboard with the serial number noted above. Can anyone provide info on this ? I think it’s early 40’s by what I found on other sites. Couldn’t find this model and serial though. Thanks for your time

You have a 1941 Champion 400 S4G. It is a 3.6 Hp single cylinder motor. The 400 came in 2 models, S4G (Standard) and D4G (Deluxe). The main difference is the D4G has a recoil starter while the S4G you have uses the rope. I have two of these S4Gs, one runner and one parts motor.

So do you still have this motor? Is it a runner?
I just got a 41 D4G….going thru it now. But parts of any kind seem to be nonexistent….have you had any luck with that?

Hi Dennywayne, Yes, I still have these two motors. I just sent Dan Umbarger some spare carb parts. I’ve had these motors since 2016 and haven’t done much with them.I did redo one carb and knew what spare parts I could spare but have yet to determine what other parts I would need or could spare from the parts motor. The main hold up on the good motor is that it has a two piece steel gas tank and leaks at the seam. I don’t have the ability to repair it myself and haven’t talked myself into taking it to the radiator shop to be boiled out and resealed as that would cost more than the motor is worth. I will eventually suck it up and find the nerve to do it for the love of the hobby but not right now. I do hope you can find some of the parts you need and I will let you know in the future if there are any parts I can spare. Your motor looks like a pretty good project. Good luck with it!

Buy a por4 gas tank repair kit…..cleans out the rust and then coat the whole inside with a rubber type coating that resists all gas and petroleum products. I am using it on this one and have used it before on a 1972 Polaris colt 250 I restored.
It works great and seals up all the pinholes as well as cleaning the tank out. I think I’m good on parts now…in paint and after putting a carb kit in I hope I’m good to go.

So I am curious about the side skirts….it looks like the 1sg didn’t have them ? All the pics I find none do…but the manuals I found show sheet metal on the D4G (which mine has) but it looks like the S1G didn’t?

The kit will run you 60.00 probably ,make sure you order the cycle tank kit….otherwise it does a big tank but runs 95.00
The small one is fine for a 3.6 gallon tank…overkill actually….the Polaris was 10 gallons.
