Hi fellows – I want to say thanks again for offering your expertise on this subject.
I had rebuilt the entire lower end of my 5.5hp Johnson 2 years ago, except for the shift rod seal, because I didn’t know how to remove that brass bushing that held the shift rod seal in place. Suffice to say, that’s where the oil leak was and the reason for me initiating this post.
I don’t have an air compressor and I’m unfamiliar with pressure testing, so the best I’ve done at this time was to seal up the bottom end and install the new shift rod seal. I refilled the lower unit with oil and I’ve laid out this lower end on newspaper for the past 4 days to see if I can detect any leaks. I’ve rotated the lower unit into different positions over the course of the past 4 days and no oil has been detected on the newspaper. So far – so good.
I’ll install the gear case to the driveshaft housing tomorrow. I’m waiting on a new lower bearing seal (#4 in the diagram and part #303391) and o-ring before I can finish putting the powerhead back on and then I can test the motor out.
Thanks again!

Before I built the pressure tester, I’d just replace the seals, run it, and look for water in the oil after running it a while. I think you’re on the right track. If you do a lot of them, it’s worth getting a tester, though.

July 3, 2017 at 11:53 am #60880Hi, I have the same problem with my ’56 RD-18. When I tilt the motor up than put it back down, Gear oil leaks out of the water out let port. I was going to replace the shift rod seal, however, when I went to my Johnson Motor parts catalog, it’s not listed, doesn’t even show on the break down. Perhaps this is why I never changed it when I had the lower unit apart. Does anyone know the part, should I try the P/N form Scoots ’55?
Thanks
